Ask Jonathan Maney what his best selling shirts are and he'll point to the one that
proclaims, "Ten out of 10 terrorists prefer Democrats" in bright red letters.
His personal favorite?
"Beware of liberals posing as Americans."
Maney, who has been selling T-shirts since 1989, has recently expanded his business
to reach out to a niche group. "Conservative shirts for patriotic Americans" is how he
markets Passionate Patriots on Racetrack Road.
His customers are conservative, mostly Republican, pro-gun ownership and supportive
of the war in Iraq.
They are likely watching the Republican National Convention closely, along with other
political wranglings during this heated presidential election season.
"I have met so many great people," says Maney, sitting in the half of his business that
caters to conservatives. "I would say conservatives are a vibrant and enthusiastic group."
In the other half of his small business, he sells special order T-shirts in bulk, devoting
one room to each.
A large back room is filled with the equipment used to print the shirts.
Some of his Passionate Patriots business comes from the Internet, but he says he also
has walk-in and regular local customers.
The messages on the wall have common themes. "Let us prey" is on the front of one
shirt, near a gun scope. A pale pink shirt sports the message, "Real woman like guns."
Maney says the conventions are too scripted to warrant his full attention, but
contemplating what's best for this country takes up quite a bit of his free time.
McCain is not his first choice. Obama's pretty close to his last. He's not saying he would
have voted for Hillary, but he admires her in many ways.
Being a true patriot is a non-partisan calling, he says. If the right Democrat were to run
for office, he'd throw a vote in that direction.
"I dearly love my homeland and treasure the gift bought by the sacrifices of our
forefathers," he wrote in an e-mail two days after his interview.
"And yes, I am conservative. As one of my shirts says, ‘Infidel - and PROUD of it."
